The following is a thank you letter composed by the South County Cast & Crew of "Zoot Suit": Dear Luis Valdez and El Teatro Campesino, We would like to give you our fondest gratitude. This opportunity that you have allowed us to experience has truly been life changing. It's been an amazing journey and our gratitude cannot be measured. Before "Zoot Suit", the only time that South County schools joined together was for sport events; competition was the only thing that held us together. Then "Zoot Suit" was presented to us, and the competition was no longer there. Rivals became friends, competition turned into support, hate turned into love. Our journey together was one of the best experiences we have ever encountered. Our cast was not perfect; we didn't always agree with each other, and we weren't always in the best of moods, but through the obstacles we triumphed over all the negative vibes and became one great loving family. Together we grew stronger as actors and as people; in addition, our knowledge expanded more than we could ever imagine. The 1940s was more than just a war in Pearl Harbor. We came to understand that there was a war on America's own streets of L.A.; there was discrimination against Mexicans, Blacks, Jews, Filipinos, and any other dark skinned race. It was a brutal era, but it made us stronger as a people, and America became a better place to live. There is no way we can repay you for this experience. Many of us danced, sang, and acted for the first time. Gonzales, Soledad, Greenfield, and King City never would have thought that this opportunity would have ever been presented to them, but you graciously presented it and allowed us to act, to love, and to shine. Thank you very much Luis Valdez & El Teatro Campesino. Sincerely and With Love, The South County Cast & Crew of "Zoot Suit" |
