Art Project: Shoebox Ofrenda (Altar)

This family friendly Art project is a creative activity catered for children and youth on how to create a simple altar at home using El Teatro Campesino’s rasquachi approach to art making. Great workshop to do as a family using materials you have at home. Instructional videos will made available online to follow at your own pace and will also introduce the tradition of Dia de los Muertos and the importance of celebrating those that have passed before us. Share a photo on social media of your completed project between October 9th – November 2 and use the hashtag “#ETCaltar2020” for chance to win raffle prizes!

Follow along to our three instructional videos!

Altar Making Workshop

Owner and curator of the Guatemalan Boutique in San Juan Bautista, Claudia Lopez, returned as our guest artist for this virtual altar making workshop livestream from Friday, October 16th, 2020. Claudia demonstrated the different elements that make a traditional Mexican Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) altar to commemorate loved ones who have departed. We are so grateful we could still come together virtually to continue to learn and educate others on this beautiful tradition. Watch the video from our workshop below!
