WHAT IS PALABRA?
Directed & Produced by El Teatro Campesino Artists, “Palabra Artist Showcase” is ETC’s annual showcase where diverse voices and performances converge into one show. Open submission process to submit short works (up to 10 minutes) to be considered for the showcase. Selected works are rehearsed, and performed in person at the ETC Playhouse in San Juan Bautista.

In the spirit of activism, social justice, promoting social change, and civic engagement, we have curated artivists, playwrights, poets, musicians, and performers to be part of Palabra Vol. TAKE ACTION! Come out and support original pieces that speak to issues impacting our communities and call us to action to promote positive change!

Performances will be hosted at the ETC Playhouse (705 Fourth St. San Juan Bautista, Ca.)
Plan to arrive one hour before showtime to check in and take advantage of our cantina & tiendita!
Please note: the performers will be outdoors, however, audiences will be seated semi indoors in the ETC shop (not our traditional theater space.)
Please plan for experiencing some outside temperatures during the performance.

Christopher Soriano-palma (he/him)
Writer of the short play
“Everything a Solution”
In the summer of 2020, an adjunct instructor named Javier is overwhelmed by current events, and is comforted by the spirit of his Abuela.
Christopher Soriano-Palma was born and raised in Watsonville, CA to Mexican-American immigrants. He graduated with an MFA in Writing from the University of San Francisco and a double BA in English and Philosophy from UC Santa Barbara. He is currently a contributor for Reclamation Magazine and has had his writing appear in several publications. He currently lives in Los Angeles, dividing his time between LA and Watsonville.
MIGUEL ÁNGEL LÓPEZ (he/THEY/ÉL)

“Voy Camino de Belén”
A spin on the classic Christmas song, this acto focuses on what if the child on his way to see baby Jesus in Belén was stopped my border patrol.
Miguel Ángel Lopez is a Mexican-Indigenous award-winning director from Pomona, CA, passionate about creating art for working-class communities. After graduating from Mt. SAC and Cal State University, Puvungna(Long Beach), he wants to explore how to decolonize theatre. He works for the Latino Theatre Co. and has started his own, Teatro Toibingna, Pomona based.

A simple call to action to accept what is – yin and yang– and unify against our common problems in the name of love.
Josué is a SoCal-based Xicanx actor, artist, storyteller and mindful media educator from West Chicago. Josué’s experiences manifested On The Way Media: a mindful media project to humanize our digital future. After serving in the nonprofit sector and beginning a career as a teaching artist, Josué has recognized the best way they can serve from their intersections is by telling their Midwestern Xicanx story.
MELISSA FLORES (SHE/HER)
Writer of the monologue
“The Power Ranger Within”
A short piece about reclaiming the film/tv industry for ourselves and the culture.
Melissa grew up in Fresno, CA to immigrant parents who worked in the fields of the central valley. Melissa had an admiration for visuals and decided to study filmmaking at Columbia College Chicago. In 2016 she received an award for Best Director of Photography from the Motion Picture Association of Haiti for her work in the independent feature film Bastard Son of A Thousand Fathers. She hopes to become a Film/TV Director and Writer. She likes to incorporate latino themes in her projects.
ROBERT MARTIN CRISTO (HE/HIM)

“The Harm in Sitting”
Arrested at a protest (and this isn’t the first time) Adriana and her Grandfather Esteban, come home to face Esteban’s son and Adriana’s father.
Robert Martin is a Chicano writer, his writing is influenced by his experiences growing up in Los Angeles and his activism, his themes include Chicano Noir, Chicano futurism, and Alternative Chicano History.

Songwriter/performer of
“Del Sol”
A song about growth and the pursuit of growth. Sometimes it doesn’t happen how we envision it, but we have to keep moving forward.
